The Incredibly Simple Guide to Creating a Wallet and Buying NFTs on WAX

Our team at Brovember Rain has been working on a number of NFT projects in Q4, and more often than not (more often than we expected), those projects are being built on WAX. A lot of the communities we’re building projects for have never purchased NFTs before, and a lot of them don’t have crypto wallets of any sort. And we like this. We like being able to introduce new people to the unique possibilities and benefits of blockchain technology within the context of a relatively safe and equitable experience.

As our (wordy ass) mantra states: we leverage blockchain tech, radical transparency and digital democracy to migrate fandoms to a more decent and generous social experience.

TLDR/EILI5: What is a NFT?

But, of course, our “welcome to NFTs” niche frequently requires us to take on the role of concierge/educator…the Alfred to your Batman, the Q to your Bond, the…I’ll stop. The point is, it’s wild times out there. We’re all learning and creating together in realtime. And we all need to help each other where we can.

One of the questions we hear every day is: how do I make a WAX wallet and buy my first NFT?

Below is a step-by-step guide to creating your wallet, buying some WAX and getting your hands on some sweet NFTs. I’ll try to make it sound as simple as it is.

You will need:

  • A desktop (laptop etc) machine. NFT trading is not particularly mobile friendly.
  • A credit card. Honey, we’re gonna buy a little crypto today.
  • An email address (optional, but ideal).
  • An open mind (or equivalent) 😄
  • About 5 minutes. Maybe even 6.

A lot of people who are not in NFT world (and even a bunch who are) are not familiar with WAX. You’re probably aware that there are many blockchains. And you’re likely familiar with a few of them like Ethereum and Solana. Well, WAX is a purpose-built blockchain, specifically designed to make e-commerce fast and easy. It is the world’s most used blockchain and is certified carbon neutral. TLDR/EILI5: What is a blockchain?

Here we go!

1. Create a WAX wallet.

This part is free and easy. You can register for a WAX wallet with an email or with any of several supported social sites. I like to use email so that all of my correspondence and auth codes go to the same place, but to each his own…I know gen Z does not FW email 😄

Go to the WAX wallet home page. You will see this:

Click “Sign up for account”, enter your info, and voila! You are the proud owner of a crypto wallet. You probably thought that would be scary. It wasn’t scary at all.

2. Buy some WAX.

Once you have created your wallet, you should add some WAX ($WAXP) to it. $WAXP is the specific cryptocurrency native to the WAX blockchain, and in order to purchase NFTs and perform certain actions on the chain, you will need some of its local currency. Essentially you will need to change some universe dollars for metaverse dollars. Your wallet dashboard should look like this:

On the right side of your screen is a “Buy WAX” button. Click this button and you will see listings for several exchanges where you can purchase WAX. I use Simplex to purchase, because it is fast and easy and available in the US (except NYC). So for our purposes we’re going to click on Simplex.

Once the Simplex module opens, enter the amount of WAX you would like to buy (in WAX or in dollars), enter your WAX wallet address (it’s the short ID that ends in .wam), enter your payment info, click purchase and you are good to go! You just copped some crypto.

Note: It will take a few minutes for your wallet balance to update. Don’t panic! This is blockchain. It takes a minute. You will get confirmations of your purchase and registration of your blockchain transaction in an email (here we go again with the email).

3. Stake some WAX.

Now that you have a wallet and you have some spending money, there is one final step. This one may seem slightly strange and new and (full disclosure) it’s gonna put a hold on about $3 worth of your WAX.

You will need to stake some WAX to get resources. There is a “resources” button at the right of your dashboard. Click on that and enter values to stake CPU, NET and RAM. You can start with staking 2 WAX to each, which is more than enough to purchase and unpack an NFT. Enter the resource you want, enter the amount yo want, and hit “stake”. You are now a locked, loaded and functional member of the web3 community. Congratulations!

If you made it this far and you would like to buy your first NFT, might I suggest the latest Brovember Rain project: KILLER HOLIDAY. If you’re not ready to buy an NFT, but you still want to hold something in your wallet and play around, hit us up on Discord or Twitter, we’ll send you a free NFT from our wallet…I guess I should say something like: “While supplies last” bc you never know when a post is gonna blow up :)

Thanks for reading, Drop your questions in the replies or on social. We’ll help walk you through it if we can. WAGMI…maybe.

And as always, this post has been brought to you by Sad Axl and the good fine folks at Brovember Rain, LLC.
